Helping Aquatic Facilities Build a More Sustainable Future

Sustainability is no longer simply an environmental consideration – it has become a strategic priority for aquatic facilities across Australia.

Rising energy prices, increasing utility costs, ageing infrastructure and growing community expectations are placing greater pressure on facility operators to improve their environmental performance while maintaining safe, accessible and financially sustainable operations.

To support the industry, we are pleased to announce the release of the new Sustainability Assessment Framework within Assessment Manager.

A Sustainability Framework Built for Aquatic Facilities

Unlike generic environmental assessments, the Sustainability Assessment has been specifically developed for the aquatic industry and recognises the unique challenges faced by public pools and aquatic centres.

The framework enables facilities to assess maturity across ten key areas:

  • Environmental Leadership

  • Community Engagement

  • Environmental Management

  • Water Management

  • Energy Efficiency

  • Waste Management

  • Chemical Management

  • Sustainable Procurement

  • Digital Solutions

  • Performance Evaluation

A Practical Approach to Continuous Improvement

The Sustainability Assessment uses the same maturity model that underpins Assessment Manager's other modules, allowing organisations to understand where they are today and identify practical steps for improvement.

Facilities are assessed across five levels of maturity:

  • Starting

  • Improving

  • Delivering

  • Maturing

  • Excelling

This approach enables organisations to build realistic and achievable sustainability roadmaps that can be implemented over time.

More Than Environmental Compliance

The new module helps facilities identify opportunities to:

  • Reduce energy and water consumption

  • Improve operational efficiency

  • Lower utility costs

  • Reduce waste and environmental impacts

  • Strengthen governance and reporting

  • Support long-term asset sustainability

  • Demonstrate environmental leadership to communities and stakeholders

Benchmark, Track and Improve

As with all Assessment Manager modules, Sustainability Assessments can be completed regularly, allowing organisations to:

  • Monitor progress over time

  • Compare facilities across an organisation

  • Benchmark against industry performance

  • Prioritise investment and improvement initiatives

  • Report achievements to executives and stakeholders

Why It Matters

Public aquatic facilities are among the most resource-intensive community assets. The decisions made today regarding water, energy, chemicals and infrastructure will shape the sustainability and viability of facilities for decades to come.

The new Sustainability Assessment provides aquatic facility operators with a practical, evidence-based framework to better understand their current performance and confidently plan for the future.

Because the aquatic facilities that thrive tomorrow will be those that make sustainability a priority today.
