Creating and Managing Goals
Overview
Goals in Assessment Manager help facilities establish clear improvement targets for each assessment type, including areas such as Workplace Health and Safety (WHS), Aquatic Health and Safety, Child Safety, Sustainability and Psychosocial Safety.
Unlike traditional goal setting, Goals in Assessment Manager follow a standardised approach. Each goal is created at the facility level and is based on a predefined maturity target and performance metric that the facility wants to achieve over the next 12 months.
For each assessment type, facilities select:
A target Maturity Level from the five available levels.
A target Performance Metric (%) that they want to achieve within the next 12 months.
These goals provide direction for assessments, benchmarking and improvement activities and help facilities measure progress over time.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Navigate to the Goals Section
From the Assess module, select Goals to view the goals that have been established for your facility. Goals are organised by assessment type, allowing facilities to establish different targets for areas such as WHS, Aquatic Health and Safety and Child Safety.

Step 2: Select an Assessment Type
Choose the assessment type that you would like to establish a goal for. Each assessment type can have its own maturity target and performance metric depending on the priorities and objectives of the facility.
Click on the Maturity Level to Edit your Maturity Goals
Step 3: Select a Target Maturity Level
Choose one of the five maturity levels that best represents where you would like your facility to be within the next 12 months. Each maturity level contains a predefined description to help you understand what success looks like at that level.

Step 4: Select Your Target Performance Metric
Enter the percentage score that your facility is aiming to achieve within the next 12 months. This metric provides a measurable target and helps track progress towards your desired maturity level.
Step 5: Save Your Goal
Once your target maturity level and performance metric have been selected, save the goal. The goal will then become the target against which future assessments and improvement activities can be measured.
Step 6: Review Progress Throughout the Year
As assessments are completed and improvement activities are undertaken, regularly review your progress against the goal. Goals remain active for a 12-month period and should be used to guide decision-making and prioritise improvement activities.
Tips and Best Practice
Goals should be ambitious but achievable. Selecting a maturity level that is significantly beyond your current capability may make it difficult to achieve meaningful progress within a 12-month period.
When setting your performance metric, consider your current assessment results, available resources and planned improvement activities. Many organisations find that incremental improvements over several years produce stronger and more sustainable outcomes than trying to achieve significant changes in a single year.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a goal remain active?
All goals in Assessment Manager are established for a 12-month period and should be reviewed regularly throughout the year.
Can I have different goals for different assessment types?
Yes. Facilities can establish separate goals for each assessment type, recognising that priorities and levels of maturity may vary across different areas of operation.
Can I change my goal during the year?
Yes. Goals can be updated if circumstances change, although it is generally recommended that goals remain stable so progress can be accurately measured over time.
Do goals automatically create actions?
No. Goals provide direction and targets but do not automatically create improvement actions. Facilities should use assessment findings and improvement plans to determine the activities required to achieve their goals.
