About the event

Leading a department or aquatic facility requires more than operational knowledge — it requires the ability to lead people, influence culture, manage performance, and make informed decisions in complex environments. This program is designed to support emerging and developing managers to strengthen their leadership capability and build the practical skills required to effectively lead teams and functions within aquatic facilities.

Drawing on contemporary leadership practices, organisational management principles, and real-world aquatic industry experience, the program explores leadership at three levels — leading self, leading others, and leading a function. Participants will gain insight into their own leadership style and behaviours through the Everything DiSC Management Profile and 360 leadership feedback processes, while developing practical capability in communication, team leadership, operational management, problem solving, and organisational performance.

Masterclass Overview

Facility Leaders is a comprehensive leadership and management development program designed specifically for current and aspiring leaders within aquatic and recreation facilities. Combining leadership theory, practical management skills, behavioural insights and workplace application, the program develops the capability required to lead teams, departments and facilities with confidence.

The aquatic and recreation industry requires leaders who can balance operational performance, customer experience, workforce management, safety, compliance and organisational outcomes. Through a blend of face-to-face workshops, online learning and leadership profiling, participants will develop a deeper understanding of their leadership style, strengthen their communication and influence skills, and build the practical management capability required to lead effectively in dynamic facility environments.

Participants will complete the internationally recognised Everything DiSC® Management Profile, gaining valuable insight into their leadership preferences, management approach and interactions with others. Throughout the program, participants will apply contemporary leadership concepts to real workplace challenges while developing practical strategies to improve team performance, workplace culture, customer outcomes and operational effectiveness.

This program is designed for:

  • Operational Coordinators

  • Aquatic Supervisors

  • Swim School Supervisors and Managers

  • Customer Service Supervisors

  • Fitness Centre Managers and Supervisors

  • Duty Managers

  • Team Leaders

By the end of the program, participants will be able to:

  • Understand and apply contemporary leadership principles within aquatic and recreation environments.

  • Identify personal leadership strengths, challenges and development opportunities.

  • Communicate effectively with staff, customers and stakeholders.

  • Lead teams to achieve operational and organisational objectives.

  • Build workplace engagement, accountability and performance.

  • Influence workplace culture and foster positive team environments.

  • Improve decision-making, problem-solving and critical thinking capability.

  • Lead operational functions, projects and workplace improvement initiatives.

The program begins with Leading Self, focusing on the foundations of effective leadership. Participants will explore their personal leadership style through the Everything DiSC® Management Profile while examining the role of values, emotional intelligence, resilience and self-awareness in leadership effectiveness. The module challenges participants to critically reflect on their behaviours, strengths and development opportunities as leaders.

The program then progresses to Leading Others, exploring the practical skills required to build high-performing teams and positive workplace cultures. Participants will examine communication, influence, employee engagement, coaching and performance management while developing strategies to improve collaboration, accountability and workplace relationships.

Participants then move into Leading a Function, focusing on the broader responsibilities of facility and departmental leadership. This module examines operational management, organisational performance, workforce leadership, financial awareness, project delivery and continuous improvement. Participants will learn how to align team performance with organisational goals while effectively managing competing priorities and stakeholder expectations.

The program concludes with workplace application and leadership development planning. Participants will identify practical actions they can implement immediately within their workplace and develop a personalised leadership development plan to support their ongoing growth and effectiveness as facility leaders.
