Course Description

Leading and Managing Psychosocial Risk in Aquatic Facilities

Identify, assess and manage psychosocial risks to create safer, healthier and high-performing aquatic workplaces.

Psychosocial risks are a critical and evolving area of workplace health and safety, requiring structured systems, informed leadership, and proactive management. This program is designed to develop capability in leading and managing psychosocial risks within aquatic facilities, including factors such as workload, client behaviour, workplace interactions, and organisational change.

Drawing on expert experience in psychosocial risk assessments, workplace investigations, and organisational reviews, the program explores how leading organisations identify and control psychosocial hazards using systematic and evidence-based approaches. Participants will examine real-world scenarios, including high-pressure environments, challenging customer interactions, and workforce dynamics, to understand how psychosocial risks emerge and impact staff wellbeing and performance.

The program focuses on integrating psychosocial risk management into existing WHS systems, ensuring risks are identified, assessed, and controlled in a consistent and defensible manner. Participants will apply their learning by reviewing their own workplace practices, identifying psychosocial hazards, and developing practical strategies to improve systems, support staff, and strengthen organisational culture. By the end of the program, participants will be equipped to lead psychosocial risk management with confidence and embed sustainable practices that support both safety and performance.

Modules Overview and Activity

The program begins with an overview of psychosocial hazards in aquatic environments, including how risks such as workload pressures, client behaviour, and organisational factors impact staff wellbeing and performance. Participants will explore how these risks are identified and understood within a structured WHS framework.

The program then progresses to risk assessment and control, focusing on applying systematic approaches to evaluate psychosocial risks and implement effective control measures. Participants will examine practical strategies for managing risks, including job design, communication, and support systems.

The program then focuses on leadership and organisational practices, including how leaders influence culture, manage behaviours, and support staff in high-pressure environments. Participants will explore real-world examples of both effective and poor management of psychosocial risks.

The final module focuses on monitoring and continuous improvement, including how organisations measure psychosocial risk, review effectiveness of controls, and embed ongoing improvement into systems and practices.
